Groin pain when running? What could it be?

🤕Groin pain when running? What could it be? 🤷‍♂️

There are a number of things that can cause groin pain when running, here are some of the possibilities:

  • Adductor-related

  • Hip flexor related

  • Hip joint related: including labral issues

  • Inguinal related: pain in the inguinal area & tenderness of the inguinal canal, this does NOT include hernias

  • Pubic related: tenderness at the pubic symphysis +/- surrounding bone


❗️Less common causes, but not to be missed!

  • Lumbar spine & SIJ joint- referral of pain

  • Hernia: inguinal or femoral hernias

  • Nerve entrapment: obturator, ilioinguinal, genitofemoral, iliohypogastric

  • Avulsion fracture or apophysitis: ASIS, AIIS, pubic bone

  • Stress fracture: neck of femur, pubic ramus, acetabulum

  • Visceral referral: genitourinary, gastrointestinal, gynaecological conditions

As you can see, many structures in this area can cause groin pain, & management can differ depending on the cause!
