RUNNING GAIT ANALYSIS

A woman runs on a treadmill in a clinical testing room while a man stands nearby holding a tablet mounted on a tripod, monitoring her performance.

There is no best way to run, but there are plenty of better ways.

Just like a golf swing or a tennis serve, your running technique has a direct impact on your performance and your injury risk. A small change in how you land, how you load, or how you move through your stride can be the difference between running pain-free and being stuck on the treatment table.

Our running gait analysis gives you a clear, evidence-based picture of how you run, and a specific plan to run better.

Who Is This For?

Whether you're a weekend parkrunner or chasing a marathon PB, a running gait analysis is for you if:

  • You keep getting the same injury every time you increase your distance or speed

  • You've been told you "overpronate" or "overstride" but nobody's actually shown you what to change

  • You're returning from injury and want to get back to running safely

  • You want to run more efficiently: less effort, more speed, fewer niggles

  • You're new to running and want to build good habits from the start

What Happens During a Gait Analysis Session?

Here's exactly what to expect:

  1. Discussion & History: We start by understanding your running background, your goals, and any injury history. Context matters, because your gait doesn't exist in isolation.

  2. Treadmill Video Assessment: You'll run at your normal pace on our treadmill while we capture high-quality video from multiple angles. We use frame-by-frame analysis to assess your movement in detail.

  3. Biomechanical Breakdown: We analyse the key factors that influence your running efficiency and injury risk:

    • Posture & trunk position

    • Foot strike pattern & overstride

    • Pelvic drop & vertical oscillation

    • Cadence (step rate)

    • Arm swing & rotation

  4. Findings & Cues: We walk you through exactly what we see, show you the video evidence, and give you specific, actionable cues to work on. No jargon, just practical changes you can implement on your next run.

  5. Follow-Up Plan: You'll leave with a clear summary of your key areas for improvement and a prioritised list of what to focus on first.

Why Bother Changing How You Run?

The research is clear: targeted changes to running technique can meaningfully reduce injury risk and improve running economy.

Studies consistently show that factors like overstride, cadence, and trunk lean are modifiable, and when addressed properly, lead to measurable improvements (Folland 2017, Moore 2016, Chan 2017, Napier 2018).

Can you actually change how you run? In short, yes. It takes focused practice, but runners successfully retrain movement patterns every day.
