Stress May Reduce Your Capacity, Not Just Increase Pain

Most runners think of stress as something that affects the mind.
Feeling overwhelmed.Sleeping poorly.Struggling to switch off.
But what if stress wasn't just affecting how you feel?
What if it was changing how much training your body could actually tolerate?
This is an idea that has been gaining attention in sports medicine, and it may explain why so many running injuries seem to happen "out of nowhere."
The Injury That Doesn't Make Sense
As clinicians, we've all heard it before.
"I wasn't even training that hard."
Or perhaps you've experienced it yourself.
You've successfully completed weeks of high mileage, then suddenly develop an injury during what should have been an easier week.
It feels random.
But perhaps it isn't.
The body doesn't simply respond to running load. It responds to total load.
That includes:
Running training
Strength training
Work stress
Family commitments
Poor sleep
Travel
Illness
Nutrition
Emotional stress
Every one of these contributes to the overall demands placed on your body.
Think of It Like a See-Saw
I often explain this to runners using a simple see-saw.
On one side sits total load.
That includes:
running training
strength training
work demands
family commitments
travel
poor sleep
illness
nutrition
emotional stress
On the other side sits your capacity.
Capacity isn't just how strong your muscles or tendons are. It's influenced by things like:
strength
previous injury
sleep quality
nutrition
energy availability
psychological wellbeing
recovery
When the see-saw is balanced, your body is generally able to adapt to the training you're asking it to do.
But that balance is constantly changing.
Sometimes the load side becomes heavier because you've increased your mileage or intensity.
Other times your capacity side becomes lighter because you've had a stressful week at work, several poor nights of sleep, travelled interstate, or been fighting off an illness.
The training hasn't changed.
Your ability to tolerate it has.
Eventually the see-saw tips.
That's often when symptoms begin to appear.
The important thing is that most runners only pay attention to one side of the see-saw.
They carefully monitor:
kilometres
pace
heart rate
workouts
But they rarely stop to consider whether their capacity has changed.
And in many cases, that's the missing piece.
Stress Can Tip the See-Saw
Stress doesn't directly damage muscles, tendons or bones.
Instead, it appears to reduce your capacity to adapt to training.
Imagine your body is comfortably tolerating an 80 km training week.
Then life gets busy.
You're sleeping poorly, travelling for work and juggling family commitments.
Your training hasn't changed.
But your recovery has.
The see-saw begins to tip.
The same 80 km that felt manageable a month ago may now exceed your body's current capacity.
That's why runners sometimes get injured without changing their training at all.
It's not always that the load increased.
Sometimes the capacity decreased...
What Does the Research Say?
Several studies have explored the relationship between stress and injury.
Mann and colleagues followed Division I college football players and found that athletes were over three times more likely to sustain an injury during weeks of high academic stress.
Importantly, these weren't the hardest training weeks.
It was life stress influencing recovery and availability.
Otter and colleagues demonstrated that following a significant negative life event, runners experienced:
higher psychosocial stress
poorer recovery
reduced running economy
In other words, they became less efficient at the same running pace.
More recently, Gajardo-Burgos and colleagues prospectively followed trail runners and found psychological profiles differed between injured and uninjured runners, reinforcing the idea that injury risk is influenced by far more than biomechanics alone.
Taken together, these studies support an important concept:
Stress may reduce the amount of load your body can successfully tolerate.
It's Not Always Overtraining
One of the biggest misconceptions in endurance sport is that injured runners are always overtraining.
Sometimes they're simply under-recovering.
The distinction matters.
Overtraining suggests the training load itself is excessive.
Under-recovery suggests the training may be appropriate, but recovery has been compromised by poor sleep, work pressure, travel, illness or other life stressors.
The solution isn't always to train less.
Sometimes it's to recover better.
Why Injuries Often Appear During Easy Weeks
One of the most confusing experiences for runners is developing pain during a recovery week.
The assumption is often:
"My mileage dropped. Why am I injured now?"
The answer may lie in the delayed nature of the injury.
Symptoms don't always appear immediately after the load that contributed to them.
Instead, stress can accumulate over days or weeks before your tissues finally reach their limit.
The easy week wasn't necessarily the cause.
It was simply when the bucket overflowed.
What Can Runners Do?
You can't eliminate stress.
But you can become better at recognising it.
During periods of increased life stress, ask yourself:
How has my sleep been?
Am I recovering well between sessions?
Have I been travelling?
Am I eating enough?
Is work particularly demanding?
Have I noticed more fatigue than usual?
If the answer is yes, it may be worth modifying training before symptoms develop.
Sometimes maintaining consistency is a far better goal than chasing fitness.
What About Wearables?
Devices like Garmin, WHOOP and Oura Ring have made recovery monitoring more accessible than ever.
They can provide useful information on:
sleep duration
resting heart rate
heart rate variability
recovery trends
But they aren't perfect.
Recovery scores shouldn't dictate whether you train on a given day.
Instead, use them alongside how you actually feel.
Wearables are most valuable for identifying trends over time, not making decisions in isolation.
Final Thoughts
Running injuries are rarely caused by a single factor.
They usually emerge from an interaction between training load, tissue capacity and recovery.
Stress is part of that equation.
Not because it directly causes injury, but because it can reduce your body's ability to adapt.
The next time an injury seems to appear "out of nowhere," don't just look at your running.
Look at everything else that was filling the bucket.
Because the question may not be:
"Did I train too much?"
It may be:
"Did I recover enough?"
